We’re in a deeply challenging period right now as we all deal with the pandemic crisis. For some folks, there is an added layer of uncertainty if they are currently uninsured. If that’s the case with you, it could be very important to know that the Covered California health insurance marketplace is now open for a special enrollment period.

Normally, there is a single open enrollment period each year for Covered California. Plus, people who experience one of several “qualifying life events” can enroll at any time outside of that annual open enrollment.

HOWEVER, the coronavirus situation has now triggered a special enrollment period through June 30 of this year for anyone who is uninsured and eligible.

This program includes anyone who has lost their job or had their work hours reduced due to a business closure related to the virus situation. It’s expected that the result could be coverage being sought by hundreds of thousands of people in the state.

Other Details to Consider

All medically necessary screenings and testing for COVID-19 are free of charge under Covered California. And telehealth options are available to help people avoid in-person medical visits.

Folks who lost hours and income may qualify for a subsidy to help pay for insurance. And some who already have a plan through Covered California may qualify for additional financial assistance.

Also, in these difficult times, be aware that California has a standard three-month grace period for paying your health insurance premiums. After one missed payment, the insurer will continue to pay your covered expenses. However, if you miss a second or third payment, the insurer can stop paying claims.

As another option, Medi-Cal enrollment continues year-round as always, if you qualify. New resources are available to help eligible people sign up easily and obtain coverage immediately.

Traditional Special Enrollment

Earlier, we mentioned “qualifying life events” that can enable people to utilize Covered California at any time of the year.

Examples include losing employer-sponsored or student coverage, exhausting COBRA coverage, turning 26 years old and therefore ineligible under a parent’s plan, moving into California from out of state, getting married or entering into a domestic partnership, or when a child is born, adopted or received into foster care.

So keep these options in mind after June 30 and be aware that you generally will have 60 days after the event to enroll.
